Automatic analysis of the sound environment

Artificial intelligence

The hearing aid recognises the characteristics of the sound scene and adapts in real time.

How AI works in hearing aids

1. It listens to the environment. Microphones continuously pick up speech, noise, music and sounds from different directions.

2. It recognises the situation. The processor analyses signals and identifies features of the environment, such as a quiet conversation, a busy venue, street sounds or music.

3. It adjusts the listening settings. Within moments, it changes microphone directionality, noise reduction and amplification at different frequencies, aiming to make speech more accessible and sounds more comfortable.

4. It adapts to change. As you move between environments, settings update automatically without needing to adjust the controls each time.

Why it matters

AI can be particularly helpful in complex situations where several people speak at once or noise changes quickly. The aim is to improve speech understanding, reduce the effort of following a conversation and make listening more comfortable throughout the day.

AI systems differ, and no hearing aid can remove all noise or restore normal hearing. Technology therefore delivers its value only when selected and fitted to the person’s hearing profile, habits and real listening environments.

AudioClinique’s role

In our workflow, automatic software is a starting point. Personalised fitting, REM measurements, loudness assessment and realistic sound scenarios help us check that the algorithm’s choices are useful and comfortable for each individual.

Your ear’s shape becomes a digital model for custom solutions.

How Otoscan 3D works

The laser scanner Natus Otoscan 3D captures the shape of the outer ear and ear canal, creating a three-dimensional digital model without impression material.

After checking the scan, we send the model to the laboratory to produce custom earpieces, ear protection and hearing aids. For very small devices, we always assess ear anatomy and hearing needs.

Personalised adjustments in an immersive room that recreates everyday sounds.

How immersive fitting works

Fitting takes place in our immersive room: Yamaha loudspeakers reproduce everyday soundscapes, such as conversations, crowded settings and background noise.

As you listen, we adjust your hearing aids according to your hearing profile and feedback. We also use Revoloud to assess subjective loudness, meaning how intense sounds feel to you, and refine the settings. Real-ear measurements (REM) complete the verification of amplification in your ear.

How real-ear measurements work

A thin probe tube is placed in the ear canal while you wear your hearing aid. We compare the measurements with the prescription targets for your hearing profile to refine the fitting.

Why it is a breakthrough

ASL PROVISION · A GUIDE TO THE PROCESS

How to access hearing aids through the ASL.

ASL funding forms part of Italy’s National Health Service (SSN) prosthetic assistance: it is not an automatic allowance or a guaranteed reimbursement for a private purchase.

Who is eligible?

You must fall within the categories covered by Italy’s Essential Levels of Care (LEA) and meet the clinical requirements for the requested aid. Adults generally require a related recognised disability; specific rules apply to children and other eligible cases. Your local ASL confirms eligibility.

Assessment and prescription
Consult an SSN specialist authorised to prescribe. The assessment includes the necessary audiological records and identification of the appropriate aid.
Documents and quotation
Prepare the documents required by your district and a quotation from your chosen supplier, showing any contribution you must pay separately.
Application and authorisation
Apply to the Prosthetic Assistance Office of your local ASL using its procedures. Wait for authorisation before proceeding with SSN-funded provision.
Provision and verification
Once authorised, the device is supplied and fitted. The prescribing specialist then verifies it within the time limits set by the ASL.

Which documents should you prepare?

Identity document and Italian health card.
Specialist prescription and audiogram, where required.
Disability certificate or other documentation accepted for your circumstances.
Supplier’s quotation and district forms.
Self-declaration of residence and any proxy authorisation.

Confirm eligibility, coverage and required documents with your ASL. Any price difference is payable by the patient and must be clearly stated in the quotation.
